Starting in 1984, while living in New Jersey, I
volunteered my time to the Big Brothers Big Sister Association as a
mentor. I was subsequently matched with Steve, a thirteen year old living
with foster parents. I subequently volunteered my Saturday afternoons for
three years until I relocated to attend graduate school.
In 1986, I was named Big Brother of the Year by
the Camden/Gloucester County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters for my work
with Steve. Even after my relocation to attend graduate school, my
friendship with Steve continued. Steve visited me at graduate school, and
we remained in contact through the early 1990s.
In 1985, I joined the Board of Directors of the
Camden/Gloucester County Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association serving as a
board member until my graduate school relocation. I participated in
numerous fund raising events, including one at a New Jersey state prison that
offered inmates the ability to raise funds for the organization. I
organized friends to participate in various fund raisers as well. Due to
internal issues, we had board meetings that started at 7 pm and lasted until 3
am.
In 1986, I was also member of the board of the
Philadephia chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
In the early 1990s, David was the member of a
social organization in New York City that did chartible work in and around the
New York City area.
In 2004, I spent five months working on the
Education Committee of the Downtown Council of the Jacksonville Regional
Chamber of commerce developing ideas and plans for assisting local public
magnate school.
Recently,I have been active in numerous
Internet newsgroups helping hundreds of computer users solve their software and
computer related issues. Currently, I am a member of Junior Achievement
(picture below), have volunteered time to paint houses, serve meals at a
community homeless shelter, and donate blood through the Florida/Georgia blood
alliance.
